Session 1: Intro to College Admissions

Come learn about the Basics and Not-so-Basics of College Admissions with COVE! In our first session we will discuss college and financial aid options, offering a broad overview of different degree programs, application processes, fee waivers, and scholarship programs. This session has a special focus on the CUNY and SUNY systems and college access opportunity programs (EOP/HEOP and SEEK) available to students in New York State.

¡Ven y aprende sobre lo básico y lo no-tan-básico sobre el proceso de admisiones universitarias junto a COVE! Durante nuestra primera sesión hablaremos sobre opciones de universidades y de ayuda financiera, ofreciendo una perspectiva amplia sobre diferentes programas de estudio, procesos de aplicaciones, exenciones de cuotas, y programas de becas. Two financial aid administrators demystify all things FAFSA-related! In this session we will walk you through the FAFSA process, from accessing the free application, to the documents students might need to complete the FAFSA, to understanding what might come of your submission. We will also explain what types of federal financial aid a FAFSA gives students access and what happens if a student’s FAFSA is flagged for additional documentation.

Session 3: What is a Financial Aid Award Letter?
(¿Qué es una carta de concesión de ayuda financiera?/ 什麼是經濟援助獎學金 ?)
Congrats! You’ve gotten into a college! Next step: making sure you are on track to cover the costs. In this session we will give an overview of the types of federal and institutional financial aid provided by colleges. We will also discuss merit-vs. need-based options, loans vs. grants, requirements to receive and maintain financial aid, and helpful tips for understanding and maximizing your financial options with the college itself and beyond.

En esta sesión daremos una explicación sobre los tipos de ayuda financiera federal e institucional. Session 4: Navigating College
(Navegando la Universidad/ 如何導航大學)
Many students, especially first-generation students, may feel overwhelmed by how much there is to plan and prepare for. How can students set themselves up for success on campus? In this session we aim to empower students and families by offering helpful guidance on comparing your admissions offers, navigating on-campus interactions with staff and faculty, and getting ready for campus life from financial literacy to academic support once you have made your decision.

Muchos estudiantes, sobre todo estudiantes de primera generación, se sienten abrumados por todo lo que se tiene que planear y preparar en este proceso. ¿Cómo pueden los estudiantes prepararse para el éxito en el campus? Session 5: Non-Traditional Paths
(Caminos No-Tradicionales/非傳統道路 )
The “average” college student is anything but. This session is designed to spotlight non-traditional paths to higher education with a focus on Associate programs and the basics of transfer admission. Learn what to look for in a program to set you up for transfer success from articulation agreements to steps to prepare your application. We will also offer budgeting and financial literacy tools to help students and families alike plan ahead for navigating their futures in higher education.

El estudiante “promedio” es cualquier cosa menos eso. Esta sesión está diseñada para destacar los caminos no-tradicionales hacia la educación superior con un enfoque a programas asociados (Associate Programs) y la información básica sobre el proceso de admisión para transferencia de universidades. Aprende sobre qué deberías buscar en cada programa, para preparar tu éxito de transferencia desde la articulación de acuerdos hasta los pasos para preparar tu aplicación.
